Atelier HSL - Berlin, Brussels, Paris, Lille - 2003
COMMISSION
In 2003, the creation of a highspeed train connection (HSL) from Amsterdam to Paris was well on it's way. One of the Art Projects coïnciding with this major infrastructural effort was commissioned by the NS Dutch Railways, through The Atelier HSL. They commissioned artists, photographers, designers, architects, writers and scholars to create (art)works that relate to the HSL on themes of ‘speed’, ‘encounter’, ‘connection’, ‘travel’, ‘landscape’ and ‘Europe’. Among them John Körmeling, Saskia Olde Wolbers, Hans op de Beeck, Pipilotti Rist, Bas Princen, Elger Esser, Jem Southam, myself, and many others.
The importance of this high speed train is not the rails, but its link with the network of Belgium, England and Germany, in the strenghtening of the connection to Europe.
I worked in 'the ports of entry/exit' of the HSL: Brussels, Paris, Berlin, and Lille (last stop before the UK. London did not grant permission to photograph). The eight photoworks created were exhibited on different locations and constellations in Brussels (2003), The Hague (2004), etc.
These photoworks have since become part of the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, NL.
