Luk Lambrecht - An in-depth interview (2020)

“In your artistic practice, photography is not simply a tool to reproduce. Apart from the purely technical aspect, are you concerned with what photography is in an age when even a smartphone provides an instant image of great quality?”

Interview from 2020 by Luk Lambrecht, the Belgian curator, art critic, art writer and coördinator at PXL-MAD University of Applied Sciencel in Hasselt (B). On occasion of the solo exhibiton at B Scene Room for Art in Antwerp, B.

“As a creator of images, I find myself in a paradoxical position: in images I refer to a society that is increasingly made up of images, (…) in other words, refering to the time before the photograph was taken—isn’t really expedient. That would be ignorant towards the abundance of existing images and deny the creative power of the medium photography itself. Indeed, you could even consider that the negation of the two-dimensional potential of the photographic image. Photography is more important for that. It means that as an imagemaker I have an artistic responsibility. It’s naive to add more images to a world full of images and expect that these images will be as powerful in their communicative potential per sé, as in times gone by”.
