Portscapes - Cultural Diversity under Pressure (2009)

PORTSCAPES is the name of a series of art projects in 2009 alongside the construction of Maasvlakte 2 in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

Portscapes is a Port of Rotterdam Authority initiative developed with advice from SKOR (Foundation Art and Public Space) and curated by Latitudes, Barcelona (E). These projects were in both 2D, 3D and texts.

“In terms of the issue discussed, I would ask for the possibility to establish an international research team of politicians, scientists, port authorities, architects, artists and urban planners to reconsider the port’s uses and give them carte blanche in sketching a potential (!) economic, social and cultural makeover. No restrictions”.

For this occasion, an interview has taken place by Markus Miessen, a London (UK) and Berlin (D)-based architect, researcher, educator and writer. Markus Miessen is investigating conflict and non-consensus-based forms of participation as a form of alternative spatial practice.
