MVRDV - Glass Farm - Schijndel, the Netherlands - 2012-2013
COMMISSION
“We’ve been using 1000’s of images with a total of 3+Tb of data for each facade of this this contemporary glass farm. We created one photorealistic translucent image of the archetypical elelements of traditional farms from this area at 1.8 times the scale of the original farms”.
Schijndel’s (NL) market square suffered badly from the Second World War. Only in 2000 the town council finally accepted MVRDV's plan to re-design its unusually large main square. ‘The Glass Farm’ by MVRDV is a 1600m² ‘market hall’ with a 100% glass facade, consisting primarily of a series of public amenities such as restaurants, shops, etc..
All of the remaining farms in the area were analysed and an ‘ideal’ average was visualised from its data, 1.8 times larger than the real thing.
Many thousands of images were taken using a 400mm lens. Of this 'archive', a translucent composite image of the complete farm was created, one file for per facade, each consisting of around 3 Tb of data, resulting in over 1000 separate files for each glass plate. of the farm. Work included its design, photography, post-production and DTP, working closely with BLXM.
Digital design The Glass Farm by Frank van der Salm in coöperation with BLXM (Andre Beuving).
