Project ‘Dersim / Tunceli’ from May 2025

NOW that we’ve entered an era of polarization, it is important to separate facts from fiction. Responding to situations of conflict and its historical context is increasingly at the core of my practice.

This new project, worktitle ‘Dersim/Tunceli’, starting May 2025, will bring me to the secluded mountain ranges around Dersim (Tunceli), the homeland of the Alevi community in Türkye. For generations there has been (non)violent confrontations with the ruling parties in Turkey about identity, religion, culture and land, which have had a huge impact on the landscape, urban development and culture.

The extremes of official politics, the historical tragedies, but also its economic prospects through growing tourism vs Alevi traditions and customs, make this project a fascinating challenge.
