Studio Nauta - House by the Lake - Oudega, the Netherlands - 2018

COMMISSION

The House by the Lake, by Studio Nauta (Rotterdam) is situated in the archetypical flat landscape of the province of Friesland. The architect’s program with this project is embedded in history and the lay of the land. The House on the Lake is situated near the lake with it’s own tiny harbour. While substantial in program, the house sits modestly in the landscape, with nature enveloping the architectural presence. The premises offer multiple spaces of refuge and individual contemplation.

Photographically this commission was about the surrender to the landscape and to the contemporary architecture with its clear visual characteristics. The two volumes have been separated, but they are interlinked by a ‘communal’ kitchen, dominated by a framed panoramic view. There’s a strong connection with the water and the skies, the natural wind. In solitude, the inside spaces are opening up to the outside landscape.
