Nature as Artifice (2008)

New Dutch Landscape in Photography and Video Art.
The concept of ‘Dutch landscape’ still conjures up an image of the idyllic Dutch farmland in painting worldwide. But the Netherlands has changed a lot in the past century. Since the eighties, excellent landscape photographers and video artists have taken this artificial character of the landscape and our nature as their starting point. Art historian Maartje van den Heuvel put together an exhibition of their work and we worked together on the accompanying book: Nature as Artifice 2008
Their artworks show highways, railways, symmetrical polder landscapes, greenhouses, industrial estates and suburban residential areas. With work by Hans Aarsman, Jannes Linders, Wout Berger, Henze Boekhout, Edwin Zwakman, Theo Baart, Cary Markerink, Hans van der Meer, Marnix Goossens, Driessens/Verstappen, Hans Werlemann, Gert Jan Kocken, Bas Princen, Gábor Ösz, Gerco de Ruijter and Frank van der Salm.
